National Tree Map – 280 million trees

Bluesky aerial mapping company have recently completed a National Tree Map based on aerial photography. It shows that approximately 13.5% of England and Wales is covered by trees. That amounts to some 280 million trees. The previous estimates were 10% coverage for England alone and 13% for the whole of the UK. The map consists of three layers: Crown Polygons; Idealised Crowns; and Height Points. The map is likely to be used by insurance, telecommunications and utility companies and for carbon reduction planning. Data are available for use in GIS under various licences from Bluesky.
